A Slightly Unusual Visual Workshop for the Aberrant Artist

w/ Lee Petty

Day 1 (Oct. 5)13:00 - 15:00

“You have to systematically create confusion, it sets creativity free. Everything that is contradictory creates life.”
— Salvador Dali

Art is great. Like, really great. But sometimes making art on a schedule, to technical specifications, with teams is really difficult. Among other things, it can involved spending too much time in your rational mind— pulling reference, analyzing feedback and there’s iteration, the endless iteration, that can transform even the most enthusiastic artist into a hopeless pile of lethargy.

But maybe we’re doing it all wrong! Maybe we should instead be more irrational. Maybe we should trust our strange subconscious, surrealist lizard brain to do all of the hard work while we have all of the fun!

Join Lee for a visual workshop where we explore unusual methods for coming up with new visual ideas and methods for pulling one out of their predictable, “comfort zone”. Taking inspiration from dada and surrealist art creation, this hands-on visual workshop will be strange, inspiring and maybe— just maybe— useful.

w/ Tim Garbos

Day 1 (Oct. 5)15:30 - 17:30

In this workshop, you will get to completely redesign another person's game. You have to bring a game or pitch; it can be everything from a vague idea to something that's ready for launch. In small groups, you'll take apart each other's games, change the titles, the gameplay and possibly ruin them in the process. I promise you that it'll be fun and interesting and you can learn a lot from how other people see your game when you allow them to change everything. You have to be okay with someone completely breaking your game, and it's okay if you don't want to bring your darling, but I encourage you to do it. No computers needed.

Game Audio Workshop

w/ Martin Mathiesen Kvale

Day 2 (Oct. 6)10:00 - 12:00

Within games there is a field that often seems esoteric to outsiders, namely the field of audio. This workshop dives into this world by getting an idea on how it works, and how you can work better using audio as an asset to your creative endeavour. Bring your phone.

This workshop is for both fledgling sound designers and anyone curious to sound/how to work with sound designers.
